The Secret Codes and Advanced Codes are Innovative Literacy Curricula for Kindergarten and First Grade.

The Secret Codes and Advanced Codes are based on the Science of Reading. Students readily engage in the curriculum and become competent readers. All students will excel including students who are at risk for reading failure.

“Two years ago I thought about quitting teaching. Too many of my students were failing to read. I did not know if I should recommend that they be retained, and continue to do the same thing that was not working, or suggest promoting them to the next grade where I knew that they would fail. It broke my heart. I did not know what to do. This year is the first year that ALL of my students are reading. I cannot say enough about the Secret Codes.”  Kathy Fuss, Cleveland Primary

About The Author

Dr. David P. Hurford is a research scientist who has studied dyslexia for the past three decades.

From this work, he established the Center for the Assessment and Remediation of Reading Difficulties (CARRD), a nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals with dyslexia to become competent readers.

CARRD has developed procedures to identify young children who may be at risk for reading difficulties, dyslexia, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Stack of books designed to help teach children with reading difficulties

If you can dream it, we can make it

Just as important, CARRD developed training procedures to help children become competent readers. To prevent future reading difficulties, Dr. Hurford used his knowledge of learning and reading disorders to write Secret Codes, a reading curriculum for kindergartners. The curriculum was based on the Science of Reading and was created to teach reading to all children, but was designed especially to prevent reading failure in students at-risk for reading failure.

Dr. Hurford's mission involves:

  • the prevention and remediation of reading disabilities
  • searching for strategies that will lead to the improvement of remedial processes
  • providing educators and parents with intervention techniques regarding reading and learning disabilities
